About Azim Premji:

Born on 24 July 1945 in Mumbai, Premji is originally a Gujarati Muslim whose family belongs to Kutch. His father, Mohammed Hashem Premji, was a famous businessman who was also known as the “Rice King of Burma.” His father also established a company called the western Indian vegetable products limited, which dealt with vegetable products and refined oils. Mohammed Ali Jinnah- the father of Pakistan invited Premji’s father to stay over in Pakistan during the Partition of India. But his request was denied by Hashem Premji.

Azim Premji Education:

After completing his schooling, Premji went to Stanford University to study engineering (Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering). Due to the unexpected death of his father, Premji had to come back to India and take the responsibilities of the business.

Azim Premji Wife:

Azim Premji is married to Yasmeen Premji, and the couple has two sons named Rishad and Tariq. Rishad is working for the I.T. activities of Wipro as the Chief Strategy Officer.

Azim Premji Company:

At the age of 21, Premji had to take over the control of his father’s company, which dealt with manufacturing hydrogenated oils. Premji had a vision of expanding his company and diversify it in various segments. Soon the company started in dealing with bakery fats, light bulbs, hair care products, toiletries, and hydraulic cylinders.

  • In the year 1979, when the Indian Government drives out the IBM computer firm from India. Azim saw this as a favorable chance to step into the hardware and software market and started to bring Wipro in the computer business.
  • In 1980, Wipro participated with several other companies in the field of computers. Wipro partnered with the American Company “Sentinel computer corporation,” and Wipro became a successful manufacturer of the computer hardware.
  • To achieve high-quality standards, Azim makes sure that he hires the best software engineers for Wipro and to provide them with outstanding training.
  • From this, Wipro was able to achieve profitable export of the software to the U.S.
  • By the year 1990, Wipro enjoyed the enormous success and thus making Azim Premji one of the wealthiest businessmen of India.
